![]() Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” is one of the most popular and long-running musicals in the world, and my second favorite stage musical of all time. And there is arguably no adaptation as renowned as the musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The original book by Gaston Leroux is widely regarded as a Gothic Classic part horror story, part mystery thriller, and part dark romance, the tale of the tormented, half-mad genius Erik, who “haunts” the Paris Opera House, and his relationship with the ingenue Christine Daae, has inspired various adaptations and pastiches. Poor Scooby is oddly marginalised, well, as much as a man dressed in a massive furry dog suit can be, although at least he sounds just like Scooby should. The story of “The Phantom of the Opera” is no stranger to my page. ![]() All four exaggerate their cartoon counterpart’s respective characteristics, meaning that Charlie Bull’s Daphne walks everywhere with her bottom in the air. ![]() The cast certainly look the part, although if Chris Warner Drake’s brief was to resemble a plastic figurine version of the manly Fred rather than a living, breathing human one, then he’s done a good job. ![]() But it transpires a second ghost is also on the rampage so the gang disguise themselves as a rock band called the Missing Link, grab a box of Scooby snacks and head to the Palladium in the Mystery Mobile so they can work out undercover what is going on. ![]() Catching wind of the haunting, Fred et al are keen to investigate, even though the theatre owner has openly admitted he invented the ghost in order to promote his venue. This new musical children’s show based on the much loved cartoon about the ghost-busting Mystery, Inc crew is absolutely dreadful.Ĭoncocted by an Australian “themed experiential entertainment” company, the plot concerns a haunting at the London Palladium (very meta), and has echoes of Phantom of the Opera. ![]()
